Finnish shipping entity Norsepower – known for providing clean wind energy to ships with its Rotor Sail technology, has confirmed its first newbuild order for what will be a pathbreaking installation of as many as five rotor sails on a single carrier.

As reported by Splash 247, the owner of the carrier on which the installation would take place remains unknown. Further, this installation is expected to take place next year in 2021.

For Norsepower, this is a major development, especially since this will be its first such installation onboard a bulk carrier.

Commenting on the development, CEO of Norsepower, Tuomas Riski, alluded towards the adaptability and versatility of the company’s technology since its rotor sails could be installed on bulk carriers as well.

Against the backdrop of EU’s push towards the use of clean energy – especially in the maritime sector, this comes as a welcome development, since Norsepower rotor sails would significantly enhance the EEDI or Energy Efficiency Design Index of vessels. Alongside, shipping companies could brace themselves for GHG (Green House Gases) regulations that are impending from the IMO.
