Dubai Maritime News reports about a landmark deal that paves the way for better trade relations between the UAE (United Arab Emirates) and Israel. Two companies from each of these nations are jointly bidding to privatize and develop the port of Haifa in Israel.

As a result of this deal, the UAE and Israel will also consider setting up a direct shipping line between both Middle Eastern nations.

The MoUs or Memorandum of Agreements for these deals was signed between Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, who is DP World’s CEO and Group Chairman, and Shlomi Fogel, the owner of DoverTower, and joint owner of the Port of Eilat and Israel Shipyards.

Commenting on the development, bin Sulayem said “DP World’s mission is to enable global trade – our work to build trade routes between the UAE, Israel and beyond will help our customers to do business in the region more easily and efficiently.”

He also went on to add that “Israel has two ports, the port of Ashdod and the port of Haifa. They are strong ports in excellent locations. If there is an opportunity, there is nothing to prevent us from having a presence there.”

On his part, Shlomi Fogel said, “DP World and Israel Shipyards will collaborate to establish a joint venture that will participate in the tender for privatisation of the Port of Haifa.”

These announcements come amidst a historic, landmark agreement made by both countries to normalise ties, and eventually look at sprucing up economic trade and partnership.
