Rocket-landing ship named after Jeff Bezos’ Mum
Richest man in the world names former Stena Line vessel Jacklyn.
In a sentimental gesture, the world’s richest man, centi-billionaire Jeff Bezos, has named his new rocket-landing ship after his mother, Jacklyn. Bezos announced the re-naming on Instagram.
Built in 2004 for the European ferry operator, Stena Lines, the vessel was purchased by Bezos’ company Blue Origin in 2018 and is now being retrofitted at Offshore Inland Marine’s yard in Pensacola, Florida.
The Jacklyn will eventually be used as a landing pad to catch the reusable New Glenn rocket, part of Blue Origin’s space flight programme, and is set to see service in 2021. Blue Origin envisages a time when millions of people will live and work in space, tapping the resources of the cosmos in order to preserve Earth.
