Piracy pandemic prompts protests
Residents of Bonny, Nigeria, stage peaceful demonstration after a rash of pirate attacks on the region’s waterways.
People living in the shadow of Nigeria’s strategically important LNG plant on Bonny Island have protested against the spate of violent attacks against their community by pirates, reports Dryad Global.
During the demonstration, members of the community were seen carrying photographs of the mutilated bodies of some of the community’s victims. Tagged #EndSeaPiracy, the protests started in the Coal Beach district and then continued to Ikuba Square in the Madupolo precinct.
Demonstrators complained that in 2020 alone, there were over 13 attacks on the waterways that connect the island to the rest of the country, resulting in the deaths and maiming of mariners and passengers, and the theft of numerous boats.
