Costa Cruises has announced that the liquified natural gas (LNG) cruise liner, Costa Toscana, is nearing completion in Finland. The 185,000 GT, 337-metre, 6,730-passenger Toscana is the latest addition to Costa Cruises’ fleet and is scheduled for delivery in the Autumn of this year.

Built by Meyer Turku, the Toscana has been designed with a circular economy concept and the use of LNG for propulsion will eliminate all sulphur dioxide emissions and almost all particulate emissions (a 95-100% reduction). Each of the sister ships has an intelligent energy-use system aboard and the recycling of all materials used will be a priority.

Costa Cruises Chief Commercial Officer, Mario Zanetti, said: “Looking beyond the pandemic, we are focusing on [sic] to complete the transformation of our fleet and operations into a sustainable model. In addition to LNG technology, we are developing other innovative solutions, such as shore power and batteries, as we continue to work towards achieving zero emissions over time.”
