Norway’s Defence Material Agency or Forvarsmateriell (FMA) has signed a contract with Norscrap West to scrap the Fridtjof Nansesn-class frigate, KNM Helge Ingstad, reports Janes. The deal was signed earlier this month for an estimated NOK60 million. Sales of the metal recovered are expected to reduce the cost by several million kronor.
The frigate will be scrapped at Hanøytangen by the end of the year, according to the FMA. Norway chose a domestic company for security reasons and agency technical experts will oversee the work in accordance with Norway’s Security Act.
Helge Ingstad was seriously damaged when she collided with tanker Sola TS on 8th November 2018, just outside Ågåtnes oil terminal, near Hjeltefjorden. She ran aground after the collision and later sank in shallow water.
