Maersk Essen loses hundreds of containers in the Pacific

Up to 750 containers have been lost from the Maersk-operated containership, Essen, en route from Xiamen to Los Angeles.

The world’s largest containership line, Maersk, has confirmed that its 13,100 TEU Danish-flagged ship, the Essen, has lost up to 750 containers. The loss, reported and confirmed by WK Webster, the cargo-casualty management firm, occurred on 16th January.

In a statement, Maersk said: ” “We regret to announce the 13,100 TEU, Danish-flagged, Maersk Essen en route from Xiamen, China to Los Angeles, California on Maersk’s TP6 Asia/US West Coast service experienced heavy seas during her North Pacific crossing on the 16th of January 2021, resulting in the loss of approximately 750 containers overboard. All crew members are safe and a detailed cargo assessment is ongoing …”

The Essen was built in 2010, measures 366 LOA and is 141,000 gross tonnes. She is operated on the TP6 route that connects Asia and the US West Coast and calls at Cai Mep, Kwai Chung, Yantian, Xiamen, and Los Angeles.
