Reuters reports that a leading UK logistics expert, Jon Swallow, has likened the UK’s post-Brexit customs border to self-imposed “economic sanctions”.

Britain’s departure from the EU after 47 years means exporters now find themselves forced to complete a myriad of customs and safety declarations, health checks and rules-of-origin details before they can trade with Europe.

Swallow said many EU drivers are adding £400 to the cost of driving into Britain so they are covered if they are forced to return without any goods and the freight industry estimates that up to half of the trucks going back to the EU are empty.

“We have calls daily at the moment with people, desperate… They need to get their goods moved before the buyer decides to go somewhere else. It’s too much. They just can’t comprehend all that needs to happen”.
