Sweden’s Port of Helsingborg has announced that a new container terminal will be constructed at the haven, but that current operations will continue. Bart Steijaert, Chief Executive for the port said: “We are continuing to invest in the future and in broad terms this means that we will in principle build a new container terminal from scratch.”

The new terminal will lie to the south of the present one and three possible sites have been appraised. It is hoped that the new site will give the port 40 years’ development potential and space to grow, enabling it to handle an annual growth of 2 to 4 per cent.

Construction will commence in 2026 and the new terminal will commence operations in 2028. Development of the new terminal will proceed in parallel with the normal operations of the port.

In addition to the move, a new quay will be built with 13 meters depth and 750m long, enough for three 225 meter-long vessels to go alongside and a new eco electric-crane system will be built to handle the increased volume. The new cranes will help the port meets its goal to be completely fossil-free.
