The Thai navy made a rescue with a difference when it went to the aid of four cats stranded aboard a sinking ship that caught fire off Koh Adang in the Andaman Sea, reports the Daily Mail.

The crew had already jumped to safety,  but during a check for oil leaks, the navy personnel spotted four ginger cats clinging to the burning vessel.

A sailor swam out to the distressed animals and was able to ferry them to safety on his back. The feline mariners are reportedly safe and suffering no ill effects from their ordeal, and are being cared for by the rescuers at their command post.

The fishing vessel, Phamonsin Nava 10, caught fire and started sinking approximately 13km off the tropical island on Tuesday. All eight of her crew are safe and were rescued by a passing fishing boat.

First-Class Petty Officer, Wichit Pukdeelon, said: “I used my camera to zoom in to the boat, and I saw one or two cats popping their heads out.” The rescuers have received more than 2,500 comments on Facebook in praise of their actions.
