A Ukranian-operated small handysize, the Afina I, has collided in the Aegean Sea with the Piraes-based Kiveli, says the Hellenic Coastguard. The two vessels are 12,800-dwt and 38,200-dwt, respectively.

The accident happened early this morning at 0410 GMT when the ships were about 10nm northwest of the island of Kythera. The Afina I, built in 2010, suffered water ingress, but no casualties are reported among either of the ships’ crew. The Kiveli had a crew of 24 aboard and was carrying a cargo of fertiliser from Casablanca, Morocco, to Varna, Bulgaria.

Coastguard spokesman, Nikolaos Kokkalas, told Greek television: “There’s no injury or danger to any of the crews. Coastguard boats have rushed to the area and there are already four other commercial and other private ships there. Weather conditions were very good in the area this morning and continue to be so”.
