The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has launched an investigation into a lifeboat drill accident aboard the British polar research vessel, RRS Sir David Attenborough.

The MAIB said two people sustained minor injuries when the lifeboat rolled onto its side and then fell overboard during a launching drill. The incident occurred on 4th March as the vessel was in Loch Bule, Scotland.

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) confirmed additional details to the BBC: “We can confirm that on Thursday 4 March a lifeboat failed to deploy correctly during testing. Two people sustained minor injuries. An independent investigation is in progress. To protect patient confidentiality British Antarctic Survey does not disclose personal information.”

The RRS Sir David Attenborough, which cost £200m and took four years to construct, started her sea trials last year.
