A 43-year-old Indonesian Navy submarine with a crew of 53 is missing in waters north of the island of Bali, reports Reuters. The vessel lost contact at 04:30 local time Wednesday.

The KRI Nanggala-402 was conducting a torpedo drill, but failed to relay the results as expected, said a navy spokesman. Indonesia has appealed for help from neighbouring Australia and Singapore in the search for the missing vessel.

“We are still searching in the waters of Bali, 60 miles (96 km) from Bali, (for) 53 people,” military chief Hadi Tjahjanto told Reuters in a text message.

The 1,395-tonne KRI Nanggala was built in Germany in 1978 and underwent a two-year re-fit in South Korea in 2012.
