Footage released by APBS shows the moment when a dredge barge snaps in half and starts to sink under the feet of a boatman. With just moments to asses the situation, and a stark choice before him, the bold worker leaps to safety aboard the dredger itself.

As the barge is loaded from the dredger’s chute it reaches a point where it can no longer bear the load and snaps, leaving the hapless worker the tough decision of whether to jump to safety or take to the water on the other side of the barge. Luckily, he made the leap and was later admitted to hospital for checks.

The accident happened during dredging work near the town of Smederevo on the right bank of the Danube in the Serbian district of Podunavlje on 8th April.

The barge and dredger are both owned by DMB Shipping which is based in the town of Ruma, Serbia.
