KEY WEST/TALLAHASSEE — Members of the Florida Senate voted to approve a proposal that would overturn a set of referendums approved by voters in the community of Key West.

The votes would restrict cruise ship access to the popular destination, following a variety of regulatory proposals that are counter to the cruise industry’s interests in the local community.

The Miami Herald reported last week that business owners across Key West are concerned about the Senate’s attempts to preempt local regulations and the will of community voters and ballot initiatives.

“I’m here to ask for opportunity, self determination and for respect for our community’s ballot box,” said Billy Litmer, owner of Honest Eco Charters, in a statement.

According to the Senate’s information, the version of the preemption bill passed 25 to 14.

A companion bill in the House of Representatives is now pending on second reading before floor debate.

The bill is likely to pass the House and Senate.

Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign the bill into law.
