With the UK’s Carrier Strike Group steaming to the Far East and tougher rhetoric coming from Washington, China has deployed its Shandong aircraft carrier to the South China Sea to conduct “exercises”, the state-owned Global Times said.

The paper said the training conducted by the People’s Liberation Army aircraft carrier task group is a “routine exercise”, the paper said via Twitter on Sunday.

“We hope the outside world can view it objectively and rationally,” a PLA spokesperson was cited as saying in the tweet.

Taiwan is a perennial flashpoint and recent Chinese incursion in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone means tensions are rising between China and America and her allies.
