Manila has told its fishermen to ignore the Chinese militia and a Chinese-imposed summer fishing ban in the South China Sea, reports Reuters.

A 1999 fishing moratorium imposed by China runs from May 1 to August 16 and covers parts of the South China Sea and other waters off China.

However, the Philippines’ South China Sea taskforce said: “This fishing ban does not apply to our fishermen.”

“The Philippines is not deterred from defending our national interest, patrimony, and our dignity as a people with all that we have,” the task force said.

The Chinese embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the news agency.
