The captain of an Italian fishing boat was injured on Thursday after the Libyan Coast Guard (LCG) opened fire on the vessel, say Italian authorities.

Two Italian boats from Sicily were operating about 30nm off the coast of Misrata when they were approached by a LCG boat. The LCG fired warning shots and struck the skipper of one of the Italian boats, Captain Giuseppe Giacalone.

Mr. Giacalone was transferred to an Italian navy vessel and evacuated for treatment ashore.

Libyan forces have frequently clashed with Italian vessels, even though Italy is a major supporter of the LCG. Libya claims a significant swath of the southern Mediterranean as its territorial seas, beyond the standard 12 nm boundary specified by UNCLOS.
