AIP given for new Large Liquified Hydrogen Cargo Containment System

Japan’s classification society ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AIP) to Kawasaki Heavy Industries for the design of the world’s largest liquified hydrogen carrier.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries has been given an Approval in Principle to build a new design of liquified hydrogen carrier by Class NK. The new vessel will be the largest of its kind.

With hydrogen seen as one of the leading fuels in efforts to decarbonize, Class NK published its “Guidelines for Liquified Hydrogen Carriers” in 2017. The cargo containment system (CCS) covered under the AIP has a capacity for 40,000 cubic meters per tank.

ClassNK carried out the review of the newly developed CCS based on its “Part N of Rules for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships,” which incorporates the IGC Code and its guidelines based on IMO’s interim recommendations.

The new design will enable the transportation of cryogenic liquified hydrogen in large quantities due to tank capacity on a par with existing large LNG carriers.
