The Port of Oakland on the US West Coast has reported its busiest quarter ever as the surge in trade pushed imports and exports to record breaking levels.

The West Coast Port of Oakland reported its total volume from January to March as 631,119 20-foot containers, beating its previous record of 612,151 set in the first quarter of 2019.

The steep increase reflects a surge in trade activity between the US and Asia, with no signs of letting up, said port officials. April’s totals aren’t expected for another two weeks, but the port expects another strong showing.

“Our business has been growing for nearly a year now,” said Port of Oakland’s Maritime Director Bryan Brandes. “Based on the evidence, we expect the trend line to keep going up.”

The port is the third busiest on the West Coast behind Los Angeles and Long Beach.
