A Danish man has been charged with the brutal 1987 murder of a young German tourist aboard the Viking Line ferry, Viking Sally.

The 20-year-old German tourist suffered several blows to the head as he slept in his sleeping bag on the ferry’s helideck. His 22-year-old girlfriend was also attacked and suffered life-changing injuries. The young couple were interailing and were en route from Stockholm to Finland.

The 52-year-old , who was 18 at the time and also a passenger, was a key witness in the murder investigation and was later questioned as a suspect. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Now, 34 years later, Finnish authorities in the city of Turku believe they have enough evidence to convict him and have cited text messages and written evidence in the indictment.

Viking Sally later became the M/F Estonia which sank in 1994 with the loss of 852 lives.
