Japanese carrier, NYK, has signed a deal for a dozen new LNG pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) with Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co. Ltd and Nihon Shipyard. Co. Ltd. The work will be split equally between the two Japanese yards.

Delivery is planned successively from 2025 to 2028 and NYK says the new additions to its fleet are in line with the company’s stated objective of reducing CO2 emissions by 50% by 2050.

LNG, in conjunction with hull modifications, will help reduce CO2 emissions from the new vessels by 40% in comparison to ships using conventional heavy fuel oil.

The 12 vessels announced today will each measure just under 200 meters in length and have a total car capacity of between 6,800 and 7,000 units.
