The port of Shuwaikh in Kuwait says it has seized 17kg of “shabu” or methamphetamine hidden in bags of rice in a container arriving from Iran.

The seizure comes less than a day after a similar attempt to smuggle 5.4 kg of the drug into the country was foiled by customs officers.

Kuwait’s Director-General of Customs, Counsellor Jamal Al-Jalawi said Iranian shipping lines are considered consider prime suspects for drug smuggling operations.

Mr Al-Jalawi also said new smuggling methods include hiding narcotics among foodstuffs. The street value of the 17kg haul is estimated to be in excess of a million Kuwaiti dinars.
