Hapag-Lloyd places new order for ultra-large containerships
German line places order for another six ULCS in South Korea.
Hapag-Lloyd has placed an order for another six ultra large containerships with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea. The new vessels will each have a capacity of more than 23,500 teu and will feature dual-fuel engines. Delivery is expected to commence in 2024.
“With this investment in the additional newbuildings, we want to take another step in the ongoing modernization of our fleet – in terms of both ship size and sustainability,” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd. “At the same time, we want to meet the persistently high demand and reduce our slot costs.”
Hapag-Lloyd is the world’s 5th largest boxship operator and has approximately 7.2% market share. With spot rates soaring, the company has recorded enviable returns this year, with a net profit of $1.45bn in the first quarter.
