Even though government asked to be removed, Nigeria will remain on insurance “risk list”.

Insurers have decided to keep Nigeria on their list of riskiest waters, even though the West African nation asked to be removed following its initiatives to combat piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

Neil Roberts, head of marine and aviation at London-based Lloyd’s Market Association told Bloomberg recent efforts by Nigeria and her neighbours to tackle the probelm are still “not enough to fill crews, owners or insurers with confidence… It is encouraging of course, but cannot be said to be safe.”

“Nigeria has demonstrated enough commitment toward tackling maritime insecurity to avert such premium burden,” Bashir Jamoh, the director general of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, said in a statement on June 18. “We therefore invite the international shipping community to rethink the issue.”

The Gulf of Guinea is currently the world’s number one piracy hotspot and accounted for 95% of all kidnappings at sea in 2020.
