The Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC) vessel, MSC Messina, is reported to have suffered an engine room fire off the coast of Sri Lanka.

The 4,743-teu 1995-built vessel reported the fire while approximately 425 nautical miles from Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Unconfirmed reports suggest one of the 28 crewmembers aboard is missing.

The Liberian-flagged vessel was en route from Colombo to Singapore when the accident occurred. The Indian Coast Guard said the vessel was now in a “stable condition” and that Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre at Port Blair continued to “monitor the situation”.
