Analysts Project 44 says that although the Ever Given is on the move and ports in China are clearing their backlogs, the supply chain may be affected by Covid-related disruption for the rest of the year.

High dwell times at ports in South China continue, despite the fact that the Port of Yantian is now back to full operations and is handling around 40,000 teu per day across 20 berths.

“The data suggests that disruptions related to China’s Covid-19 quarantine efforts could extend well into the year, impacting seasonal shipments as far out as Christmas,” the analyst said.

The rolling seven-day average dwell times at Yantian were 12.9 days for outbound cargo from the Port of Loading and 4.2 days for inbound cargo at the Port of Discharge.

Project 44 concludes that the high dwell times mean there is still a backlog to clear and noted that factories have also paused production due to lack of dockside space.
