Passenger Ship Catches Fire In the Waters of Sumatra, 86 Evacuated

The Gunsa 8 passenger ship caught fire on its way from Tanjung Kalian port, Bangka Belitung to Tanjung Api-api, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. 

The ferry departed Tanjung Kalian Port, Bangka Belitung at 15.42 WIB. The ship unexpectedly released smoke outside the waters of Sungsang, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, around 16.26 WIB on Monday.

“A total of 86 passengers survived and were successfully evacuated at the Tanjung Kalian KKP Command Post.”, stated Rio Taufan Febriano, Public Relations of the South Sumatra Basarnas. He also reported that the combined SAR team was still fighting the fires that torched the Guncline roro passenger ship. 

South Sumatra’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) dispatched a rescue team which included Tanjung Api-Api Water and Air Police of Palembang and Mentok Bangka Belitung Regency as well as Palembang Port Authority and Port Authority Office. The cause of the passenger ship’s fire remains unknown.
