An article in the South China Morning Post (SCMP) claims that China has been working on underwater anti-submarine drones for decades and may already have deployed one in the strategically vital Taiwan Strait as early as 2010.

The revelations come from a newly declassified military-funded research programme paper which says an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) was developed by the Harbin Engineering University.

The SCMP article says the UUV could be planted on the sea floor and lay dormant until being activated in the event of war, and asserts that AI technology is superior to human sonar operators: “Sonar operators till need to use their eyes and ears to make judgments on important issues such as identifying friendly vessels, with final decisions taken by the captain.”
