In a televised address this week, Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani, announced that his country’s first oil terminal in the Gulf of Oman is now operational.

The new terminal is located neat the port of Jask, just south of the Strait of Hormuz and will provide Iran with an alternative export route to the Arabian Sea that avoids the narrow and often troubled strait.

“This is a strategic move and an important step for Iran. It will secure the continuation of our oil exports,” Rouhani said.

Rouhani said the facility will eventually be capable of exporting 1m barrels of oil a day and that a 1,000km long pipeline has been built to supply it.
