Lifeboat charity receives £200,000 in a single day after being called a “migrant taxi service” by right-winger Nigel Farage.
The UK’s Royal Lifeboat Institution has raised £200,000 in a single day and volunteering inquiries have almost quadrupled after being called a “migrant taxi service” by the right-wing political activist Nigel Farage.
The institution hit back at the claim by saying it was the RNLI’s moral and legal duty to rescue migrants in danger on the sea. Chief executive Mark Dowie told the Guardian he was very proud of the charity’s humanitarian work.
Jayne George, the RNLI’s fundraising director said: “We are overwhelmed with the huge level of support we have received in the last couple of days.
“This was never a fundraising campaign – we simply wanted to tell the story of our crews and make it clear that our charity exists to save lives at sea.
“Our mission is to save every one. Our supporters’ kindness means so much to us. Without them we could not save lives at sea; every one is a lifesaver.”
