Prime Minister Naftali Bennett says Iran was behind attack that left two dead and vows response.
The Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has accused Iran for the deadly attack on the Zodiac Maritime product tanker Mercer Street and has vowed that his country will respond.
US, UK, and Israeli intelligence agencies have all said that evidence points to an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) being used. Iran has denied any involvement and called the accusations “baseless”.
“It’s not the first time that the Zionist regime occupying Jerusalem has made such empty accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed said.
The two fatalities aboard the 2013-built, 49,992-dwt vessel were the first deaths in a series of tit-for-tat attacks by Iran and Israel on each other’s shipping. Analysts fear the covert hostilities could escalate into a “shadow war”.
