The 51,000-dwt supramax, Ambition Journey, has gone aground in the eastern Philippines after reportedly suffering engine failure on Monday morning.

The bulker was en route to China from Homonhon Island laden with 49,550 tonnes of nickel ore when it got stuck in shallow waters off Sulangan Island.

All 21 crew were evacuated by the Philippine Coast Guard after it received a distress call from Emir Mineral Resources Group where the ore was loaded. The company said another vessel, the Victor 1, is en route to assist the Ambition Journey.

The crew were brought ashore, led by the vessel’s master Zhan Linquin, at Barangay Cogon where they were cared for. As part of the Philippines’ Covid-19 protocols, the crew will now have to undergo a 14-day quarantine.
