Russia Starts Arctic Underwater Cable Laying Project

Russia’s first undersea fiber optic cable through the Arctic, with the stated goal of improving connectivity in Russia’s remote, oil-rich Arctic region began laying ground on Aug 6^th.

As it expands its military presence and develops the Northern Sea Route, the North wants to improve patchy communications and infrastructure in its far north.

The 7,860-mile (12,650 kilometers) long cable link connecting Russia’s far eastern port of Vladivostok to the Barents Sea is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2026.
