ST Engineering’s North American subsidiary, Halter Marine, has been awarded a contract by the US Navy to detail, design and construct a new oceanographic survey vessel.

The 100m (329-foot) ship will be the eighth vessel in the Pathfinder-class to be built for the navy by Halter Marine.

The vessel’s primary roles will include hydrographic surveys of uncharted regions and collection of research data to increase scientists’ understanding of the ocean water column, sea surface, and sea-floor effects on underwater acoustics.

The new vessel will feature a 27-square-metre (300-square-foot) moonpool for unmanned vehicle deployment and recovery.
