US Navy Sea Base Arrives In Nigeria For Anti-Piracy Push

The United States first vessel to permanently be assigned to Africa, the USS Hershel “Woody” Williams, arrived in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, on August 7 to help combat piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

The fish, worth over $2 billion in annual revenue, is being lost due to illegal activities by both foreign and domestic vessels in West Africa which is disrupting to the region.

USS Hershel “Woody” Williams’ captain stated “We’re here to train and work with the Nigerian Navy on anti-piracy, tactics, techniques, and procedures.”

Piracy in the the Gulf of Guinea, an ocean region located between Senegal and Angola, is the world’s most dangerous region for sailors. This area accounts for most of the maritime kidnappings in the recent years.
