Iconic bridge opens to allow tall ship to enter Port of London, but technical fault creates rush-hour chaos.

A technical fault has left London’s iconic Tower Bridge stuck in an open position, causing rush-hour chaos in the UK capital.

The bridge opened on schedule to allow a wooden tall ship to pass this afternoon, but the 127-year-old bridge’s bascules got stuck after the vessel passed underneath, leading to severe pedestrian and road traffic disruption.

The Victorian landmark is maintained by the City of London Corporation, which said in a statement: “Due to a technical issue, Tower Bridge is currently stuck in a raised position. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

The bridge connects the busy City of London with the bustling Borough of Southwark and its bascules are typically raised about 800 times a year. The last time a technical fault stopped traffic was in August 2020.
