Alexander Kuranov, the director-general of the Russian Hypersonic Systems Research Facility that developed the 3M22 Zircon submarine-launched missile has been arrested on suspicion of state treason.

Kuranov is accused of passing sensitive information about hypersonic technology to a foreign citizen. The arrest is the latest in a series of such cases, with a number of Russian scientists, soldiers, and officials being similarly charged in recent years.

The arrest was made by FSB officers who TASS quoted as saying: “Investigators plan to ask the court to put him under arrest for two months”.

Russia’s latest missile is said to be able to travel at more than 20 times the speed of sound, with Vladimir Putin describing the technology as “unparalleled”.
