The wood-chip carrier, Crimson Polaris, has broken up after suffering substantial damage during a grounding yesterday.

The 39,910 gross ton bulk carrier was inbound to the north western Japanese port of Hachinohe on 11th August with a cargo of wood chips from Thailand when she went aground after suffering steering failure.

All 21 of the Chinese and Filipino crew were evacuated from the vessel by the Japanese coastguard and the vessel was last reported to be anchored and in no danger of sinking. However, at 04:15 local time this morning, the vessel broke in two just forward of the deckhouse.

The wreck is approximately 2.5 miles offshore and oil containment operations are underway.
