Also known as the southern lights and southern polar lights, the Aurora Australis lights can be red, green, or a combination.

Images from the International Space Station (ISS) were shared of Aurora Australis in the upper atmosphere as it passed over Earth near the Indian Ocean.

Most easily spotted from Antarctica and visible in New Zealand, Australia, southern Chile, and Argentina, but it can also be spotted from South Africa.

Solar wind causes magnetic disturbances in the magnetosphere, resulting in a glow on the horizon.

The dynamically changing color patterns are fun for anyone who watches the stars. It also makes “Aurora noise”.
