The United States Coast Guard and the bulker Avra GR have rescued three people from a burning fishing vessel in the Pacific, 150 miles south of the Costa Rican port of Golfito.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Costa Rica contacted the USCG’s 11th District command centre at 2130 on Tuesday to relay a report of a fire aboard the fishing boat Baula X, with three crew aboard.

USCG 11th District contacted the Avra GR, which was in the vicinity and diverted to render assistance. The ship arrived to find three survivors clinging to a buoy. Fortunately, they had been been able to maintain contact with the shore via satellite telephone.

The survivors were rescued from the water by a boat from the USCG cutter Northland and then transferred to the Avra which will transport them back to Costa Rica.
