Walmart charters ships in run-up to Christmas
Retailer takes matters into its own hands to ensure supply over peak season.
American retail giant Walmart has decided that the best way to secure its supply chain is to charter its own fleet of ships. The decision follows a similar move by Home Depot last year as retailers try to ensure a steady supply of goods.
Walmart’s CEO, John Furner, revealed: “We’ve chartered vessels … we’ve secured capacity for the third and fourth quarter and feel good about the inventory positioning particularly compared to last year with inventory up 20% across the segments.”
Walmart has already completed two voyages using ships carrying Walmart-branded 53ft containers. The first delivery was 177 containers and the second 247.
