Oil majors in the US Gulf of Mexico are beginning to require that their offshore workers are double vaccinated as a condition of employment.

Chevron and Hess have both announced the requirement, with Hess citing the “highly infectious nature” of the Delta variant as a key factor in its decision.

Oilfield services company Schlumberger has told industry media that oil majors now require vaccinations and testing for all contractor personnel before they arrive at rig sites, while leading refiner, Valero, has imposed a blanket vaccination requirement for all new workers at its Louisiana and Texas facilities.

And in the UK North Sea, industry oil and gas association Oil and Gas UK has been calling for priority vaccination since January.

“It is a unique working environment. We’ve done really a lot to make sure that’s as safe as possible but vaccination is going to be critical,” OGUK health and safety director Trevor Stapleton told Energy Voice at the time.
