Cyber experts say increased autonomous control and remote monitoring makes rigs more susceptible to attack.

A new study by cyber defence experts Naval Dome and an unnamed oil supermajor suggests that offshore drilling rigs have become more vulnerable to cyber attack because of increased remote monitoring and autonomous control.

The study found that current cyber security solutions are not enough to safeguard critical offshore infrastructure and that there is a shortage of adequately trained cyber-domain security staff.

“Activities over two years have demonstrated shortfalls and real challenges that need to be addressed if we are to create a more cyber-secure deepwater drilling rig environment,” authors of a joint research paper, Cyberdefence of Offshore Deepwater Drilling Rigs, said.
