After winning a $2.7 billion contract three years ago, South Korea’s Daewoo Company has neared completion of five main piers and is now beginning the four year process of building a subsea tunnel that will connect the Southern port of Faw with Umm Qasr Port and beyond.

Inmar Al-Safi, information director at the General Company for Ports in Iraq said, “Phase one of the project has almost been completed and it involved the construction of five main piers by the South Korean company,” he continued, “The last phase of the project includes the construction of nearly 100 quays that will serve the port.”

No other details were mentioned in regards to the building of the 100 berths.
