Singapore’s Penguin International Limited company has been chosen to build and even operate their first ever fully electric ferry service for Singapore.

The contract which was awarded by Shell includes an order for a total of three fully electric ferries which are forecasted to begin service in 2023.

The Straits of Singapore has a highly trafficked ferry route commuting approximately 3,000 passengers each day. The new ferries will be used for passengers commuting off the mainland of Singapore heading to Bukom which is an island where the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park is located.

“The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is committed to lower the carbon footprint of our local harbourcraft and our port operations. Shell’s bold move to commission new fully-electric ferries will take us a step closer to making a low-carbon future a reality for our maritime sector,” said Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive, MPA.
