Vessel Hits Rough Seas and Loses 40 Containers

Publisert

On October 22 a ZIM Kingston Maltese-flagged cargo vessel was traveling to Vancouver, Canada when it encountered high winds and rough seas. The vessel was lifted to one side near the waters and as a result, 40 containers went overboard.

A warning was sent out to nearby vessels by the Canadian and US Coast Guards to advise that some of the containers had sunken and some were only submerged partially which posed a risk to those vessels near Vancouver Island.

Reports that some of the containers contained hazardous materials were then broadcast on NavWarn as the Coast Guards were told that some of the materials in the containers have the potential to spontaneously combust.

8 containers have been located so far with hazardous cleanup still an ongoing effort by the US Coast Guard, Canadian Coast Guard, and other joint organizations.
