Crew Held Against Their Will Aboard Livestock Carrier

Publisert

On November 27 a livestock carrier was intercepted in Cartagena, Columbia arriving from Libya after Spanish officials were tipped off about the possibilities of human trafficking.

Upon investigation, eight Syrian workers aboard working in forced labor without the proper training were found by a Guardia Civil team inspecting the matter having also discovered falsified documents.

The Syrians were found to have paid an estimated EUR13,000 expecting to be delivered to Europe and were subjected to forced labor for many months instead.

Siting “exploitive labor conditions”, violating rights of foreign citizens and other criminal matters, the ship’s captain was arrested by Spanish police.
