On January 2 while at port in Lisbon, Portugal passengers were tested aboard a cruise ship as a suspected Covid-19 outbreak was occurring amongst its crew.

The AIDAnova cruise ship had been docked in Lisbon since December 29 when 52 positive Covid-19 cases were found within the crew who were all fully vaccinated.

The cruise was assessed and allowed to voyage to the Spanish island of Lanzarote however, after testing its 2,844 passengers and 1,353 crew members, it was determined to suspend the rest of the voyage after another 12 people tested positive.

The captain of the port Diogo Vieira Branco stated, “The company’s protocol was immediately actioned, with those infected, who are asymptomatic or displaying light symptoms, immediately isolated on the ship … and the company decided to end the cruise and disembark the passengers.”
