The season has began where icebreaking takes place in the Great Lakes of the US, between December and April and with that, the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) has assigned two icebreakers specifically to the area.

The CCGS Griffon and CCGS Samuel Risley are being dedicated to connecting waterways of the Great Lakes throughout the winter.

In the season of 2020-2021, the Canadian Coast Guard received icebreaking calls for 195 incidents.

In conjunction during the season, the CCG and the US Coast Guard (USCG) monitor daily ice updates alongside other icy conditions observed with satellite imagery provided by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
